It takes a village to raise a kid, but the heart of a community to comfort and support a dying man and his wife. Katie Jordan tells her story of hope, faith and community spirit in her book, "We Carried the Mat." The book details her husband's fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Jordan's determination to make his final years memorable and enriching.
"So many people get married and seek an escape clause," Jordan says. "I took my vows seriously and I was going to see this illness through and support Jay until the end.
"I didn't want it to feel like we were standing around, waiting for him to die. Instead, we made memories that would be so special in years to come."
The book is a compilation of Jordan's journals, written during Jay's two-year battle with ALS. The journals give insight into the everyday battles associated with caregiving while also providing practical tips for caregivers at their wits ends.
Through it all, Jordan relied on her Church community for strength.
"There were days when I asked for help for each little task and others when I needed help just to get through," Jordan says. "Through it all, the community carried my husband and I through his final years, until he arrived at God's healing hands."
