It's not easy being the new guy on the job - especially if the job is serving in the military during wartime. In his new book, Peter Hague recounts life serving with the Army's A Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry (Wolfounds), 25th Infantry Division between Nov. 21, 1967, to Nov. 20, 1968. It chronicles the experiences he had as a combat infantryman during the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive in 1968. The biography is the first of a series of books Hague plans to write about his experiences serving with the "Wolfhounds".
"Wolfhounds: My Combat Tour in Vietnam 11/67-11/68" draws readers in from the very start. From the first in-country welcome party for new recruits to descriptions of what it meant to be point man (usually, an attack by the greatly feared and vicious red ants) and devastating attacks close to his location, Hague serves up a dish of reality. Infantrymen learn how to appreciate small privileges - like hot food and coffee right in the middle of a firefight, devoted buddies and an unexpected chance to ride bicycles. He even describes assisting in delivering a baby. The author's colorful language - his attempt to stay true to the dialogue men used on the front lines - and his no-holds-barred descriptions of the acts of war bring it to life in ways textbooks can't capture.
Author Peter Hague was born and raised in northern California. He attended a semester of junior college before dropping out and was drafted. Hague and his wife, Lisa, have been married almost 30 years. They have two sons.
