In Bear! (published by AuthorHouse), author Vel Orr's new western novel, readers are transported back to the American "old west" with its savage Indians and dangerous wild animals.

In 1873, a budding romance ended in tragedy. With the loss of his new love, Jim Early obsessively pursues a giant grizzly to the ultimate bloody finale. As Jim moves ever closer to his ultimate goal, historical facts about the frontier locale, real characters of the time, interesting and typical description of Indian life, create a cinematic period set for the action drama.

Major players in this story are a tribe of 400 Cheyenne dog soldiers; the Indians greatly outnumbered the cavalry here in battle.

Throughout the story, relationships are torn by racial conflict and persisting civil war passions. Underlying governmental intrigue, the lure of gold, and the panorama of Custer's 7th U.S. Cavalry in garrison and in battle contribute texture. Revenge, as this author states, smolders like a smoky hot coal throughout.

An excerpt from Bear!:

"The bear smelled blood. He picked his way purposefully now, surefooted in the dark, down the rocky mountain. ... Squatting by the stream, Rose was startled by a small noise. A flash of lightning revealed a giant grizzly bear who had now found the source of the blood scent. ... Rose's scream died in her throat as the bear attacked. ... The night darkened and a steady, hard rain began."
