As Confucius once said, "Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall."

As a young adult, Maha Kallas was caught between two civil wars. In 1971, she left her hometown in Syria to earn an education and a career in Lebanon, only to learn a deadly event had taken place back in her hometown in 1982. Filled with pain, sadness and determination, Kallas immigrated to Canada in search of hope and new opportunities for herself.

To encourage others through their own struggles, Kallas writes "Unexpected Journey," a fictional drama that invokes self-empowerment, perseverance and personal development for women across all cultures.

In "Unexpected Journey," main character Emma experiences the challenges of growing up as a woman during the early 19th century. Emma's granddaughter Mary emulates her strength and tenacity, and the two are a source of inspiration as they take readers through unexpected twists, turns and surprises.

It is Kallas' ultimate hope that her new book remind readers they can overcome anything if they accept it and make the best of it. The life Kallas has been able to build for herself, including a successful career and independence, serves as an inspiration to anyone facing roadblocks in their own lives.

"The challenges of life are the same for everyone- love, hate, unjustness, ambition, dilemma, etc," Kallas said. "Life' storms are unavoidable but misery is a choice."
