"Tens of thousands of people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico over the past seven years" the BBC reports, attributing the deaths to "fighting between rival drug gangs." In this backdrop of strife and bloodshed, Frederick L. Malphurs tells the fictional tale of the descendants of Don Diego de la Vega, better known as the hero Zorro. This is the story of "UN AÑO EN LA VIDA DEL DR. ZORRO" (published by Xlibris).
Malphurs' novel follows the lives of the De la Vega family. Their ancestors moved away from Southern California and they made a new home in Culiacan, Mexico, where they quickly rose to prominence while rumors circulated of their wealth and of their descent from the great Zorro. In the present day, things have taken a turn for the worse as fighting between the government and the cartels heats up. Kidnappings, murder, threats, and intimidation by drug cartels impinge on every facet of local life, something Malphurs draws from real life.
When a member of the De la Vega family is slain, her courageous brothers - the doctor Eduardo de la Vega and the Jesuit priest Teodoro - decide that enough is enough. They take up the mantle of their ancestor and vow to protect their city from the cartels, becoming a force of retribution that the cartels cannot ignore. They act with extraordinary stealth and boldly strike at the criminals despite the constant danger and threat.
"I would like the readers to be entertained, enjoy the story, and perhaps do some thinking about what more could be done to eliminate the illegal drug cartels," says Malphurs. His novel is a tale of adventure, action, honor and strength of family. In a twist that proves the adage that "truth is stranger than fiction," it parallels real-life events where Mexican citizens have banded together to form vigilante groups and militias to combat cartel operations.
