Two of a Kind by Susan Mallery has debuted at #8 on the New York Times bestsellers list for mass market paperbacks, #9 on the NYT list for ebooks, and #7 on the USA Today bestsellers list, which tracks books of all formats on a single list. Two of a Kind is the second book of Mallery's summer trilogy of Fool's Gold romances, some of the best beach reads of the summer. The other two books in the trilogy are Just One Kiss (June) and Three Little Words (August).
"I'm thrilled that readers love Felicia, the heroine of the story, as much as I do," Mallery says. "She's one of my favorite characters that I've ever written. She has a genius-level IQ, but that has made it difficult for her socially. All she really wants is to belong, to have friends, to fall in love. She is blunt and earnest in her speech, and she doesn't really understand why people find her humorous. She's wonderfully awkward. I adore her."
Many readers have said Felicia reminds them of Dr. Temperance Brennan or a female Sheldon Cooper in the TV shows Bones and Big Bang Theory - brilliant social misfits who make them laugh out loud. Mallery, while a fan of both shows, says Felicia's different. Unlike Bones, Felicia understands pop culture references, but she doesn't understand normal social boundaries in terms of what you "should" or "shouldn't" talk about.
"In the conversation you're having with your friend, there's the elephant in the room," Mallery says, "she will discuss the elephant, genotype, why it's there, and how it got born. Nothing is subtle in her world. If it's happening, you talk about it."
Felicia's romantic foil is Gideon Boylan, a former Black Ops soldier with PTSD after having spent two years as a prisoner of war in a Taliban prison. Gideon bought a radio station in Fool's Gold, California, where he does a late night oldies show. While Felicia yearns to find love, Gideon avoids it because he learned in captivity that love will get you killed. He feels safer living on the fringes of society, observing from a safe distance.
"Two of a Kind is one of the sexiest books I've ever written," Mallery says. "And, I think, one of the most emotionally satisfying. If anyone deserved a happy ending, Felicia and Gideon did!"
Including Two of a Kind, the past eight Fool's Gold romances to come out in mass market paperback have landed in the Top 10 on the New York Times bestsellers list, including Just One Kiss, which was released last month. The final book of the 2013 beach read trilogy will be Three Little Words in August.
