Two NSTA Books About Gardens Engage Kids With Text, Photos

Two new books from NSTA Kids introduce elementary-age children to the appeal of gardens, whether they attract butterflies to a First Lady's hometown or grow right outside the classroom. Each book combines engaging text and vivid photos with helpful resources for educators and parents who want to cultivate kids' interest in nature.

Mrs. Carter's Butterfly Garden tells the story of how former First Lady Rosalynn Carter started a front-yard project that grew into a butterfly trail through her hometown of Plains, Georgia. Readers learn why it's good for people when butterflies have more habitats and how kids can create their own butterfly gardens at home or at school.

My School Yard Garden shows students they can create a place to observe plants, insects, and even animals right outside their classroom windows. The book teaches that even children going to school in urban areas can learn about nearby nature through seedling beds, a compost bin, and a birdhouse.

The author of both books is Steve Rich, who worked with Mrs. Carter to create the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail. He also wrote the NSTA Press books Outdoor Science and Bringing Outdoor Science In. Rich is director of the Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center at the University of West Georgia.
