Nashville, Tenn.
Author Tommie Morton-Young weaves a creative reconstruction of the life and times of a young woman of color who was born in the 19th century, endured profound disappointment and abuse in a world rife with exploitations and injustice. Readers can follow her courageous journey where she maintained her self-respect and managed to help fellow victims in "Many Roads Traveled" (published by Xlibris).
From the shores of a faraway continent, across a restless ocean, onto the Piedmont of North Carolina and into the hills of Tennessee, comes this historical fiction narrative inspired by the life and times of the indomitable Pleasant Lane (1820 - 1905), a free, educated, black woman who was kidnapped and forced into bondage for 20 miserable years. Pleasant refused to concede to defeat even in despairing circumstances. Holding onto a family heirloom she managed to keep, she dared to fall in love amidst hate and intrigue and risked limb and life to help her people. Her life's most glorious moment came when she had the opportunity to welcome the Union Army into the mansion-the liberators finally arrived.
"The book is specially relevant at this time for some of the same fears from the 19th century are still plaguing minorities," author says. "It also shines light on some social issues and relationships known, but not generally discussed and are 'swept under the rug' so to speak."
Morton-Young highlights the power and durability of the human spirit and the dimensions and complexities of the human character. Meant to appeal to history buffs, African nationalists, African-Americans, general adult readers and women, "Many Roads Traveled" is a compelling read that will offer readers inspiration, newer insights, wisdom and entertainment.
