How does a church space support the story of the people in the church? Tim Cool's new book, Why Church Buildings Matter: The Story of Your Space, answers that question and many more about church facilities.
Stories include spaces. The church building helps tell the story of the people. In his book, Tim offers a unique perspective on church buildings. While a church building will not save a person from sin and frustration, neglecting the building can become a hurdle to reaching people who need to hear the gospel message.
Unfortunately, too many churches minimize the importance of their buildings when they need to maximize them to help tell the greatest story of all timethe story of Jesus Christ.
"Story" is all around usin virtually every aspect of our daily experiences, which means that our church and ministry facilities also tell a story. The questions for faith-based leaders are:
What story are your facilities/campus telling?
Are we intentional about the story?
Is the story congruent with who we are, who we "think we are, what we believe/value and who we want to reach for Christ?
In Why Church Buildings Matter, Tim Cool address theprimary factors to story-telling that we need to be cognizant of related to our church facilities and a first-time guest's experience including:
1. Why Your Church Facility Should SUCK
2. Theology, Pragmatiism and Story
3. Well Digging vs. Temple Building
4. Story vs. Fairy Tale
5. The "new" Front Porch
6. Design/Street-scape
7. Parking Lot Experience
8. Way-finding/Environmental Graphics
9. Personal Interactions
10.Facility Condition
11.Backstory
12. ...and so much more
