Losing a loved one is a painful experience. Even children are not exempted from experiencing grief and sadness after a loss or traumatic event. As renowned child psychologist, Alan Wolfelt, said, "Anyone old enough to love is old enough to grieve." Unfortunately, many children are unable to express these emotions, and don't know how to deal with them. Parents and guardians therefore play an important role in helping children find safe and healthy avenues for expressing and coping with their grief. In her new book, 4 Keys to Unlock A Sad Heart, licensed clinical social worker and therapist, Doris M. Arwine, uses a heartwarming story and "four keys" to guide children through the grieving process.
Arwine shares that she experienced a fire in her home when she was just five years old. She admits it was a traumatic time for her family but the losses also eventually helped them grow stronger. This event set the stage for her book, 4 Keys to Unlock A Sad Heart, and in writing it she hopes to give insight to others who are also dealing with painful situations.
Arwine uses the heartwarming story of squirrel children who want to unlock a sad heart using four keys. These keys include reflection and thinking about memories, writing out thoughts and feelings and what they are thankful for, talking to "safe" friends about their losses and finally crying which is a good and "cleansing" avenue for releasing the emotions felt inside. 4 Keys to Unlock A Sad Heart also teaches readers that grief is a natural process but most importantly, it is something that one can come to terms with.
"This book simplifies the grief process by outlining personal action that works... Grief takes time and work but the end result can make us stronger people with 'happy' hearts," says Arwine.
Enlightening and one-of-a-kind, 4 Keys to Unlock A Sad Heart combines tenderness and sensitive insight to relay the gift of healing to both children and adults who are dealing with a tough situation. It is a great resource for parents who want to help their young ones go through the grief process in a healthy way.
