Human society can be described as a chaotic hotpot of competing ideas and temperaments, as history continues to demonstrate. In "The Psychopath Will See You Now," Graham Barrett shares his insights as a veteran foreign correspondent and his views on a world in which he has been a witness to history as it is being made. He sees human nature at its best - and at its worst.

This book shows the reader that history is full of surprises. Spread through its pages are the intimate details of some of the recent past's great events: political upheavals, wars and atrocities or famine and disease. Graham Barrett, for all that he has seen of evil in this world, leavens his extraordinary experiences with humor, or what could be called a sense of the ridiculous, a key ingredient to being able to tolerate the darker side of human events. Trying to make sense of events as they occur, as Barrett strives to do, is traditionally the job of the foreign correspondent, the man or woman on the ground who writes the first, rough draft of history. In this fast-moving collection of articles, the reader travels the world with the author as he covers many major trends, observing at first hand, the end of apartheid, the fall of the Soviet empire, the violent disintegration of Yugoslavia, conflict in the Middle East, the reunification of Germany, the last murky remnants of the imperial era, the hunt for the source of the AIDS virus, the origins of the crisis in the European Union, the horrors of the narcotics trade, the lifestyles of tyrants, royalty and those who live at the edge of the civilized world.

Through this kaleidoscope shine the extraordinary individuals who shape history for good or for evil, or who entertain and awe the world through their exceptional personalities and ambitions. It shows Barrett at his reportorial best and this ultimately makes "The Psychopath Will See You Now" an exciting journey of intellectual and moral discovery through a world that never ceases to excite, amuse, astonish or dismay.
