The Philadelphia Social Innovations Lab, a local economic development and social sector enterprise incubator, is proud to announce the release of Social Innovation and Impact in Nonprofit Leadership. Published by Springer Publishing Company, the book is a guide and toolkit outlining the core competencies required to lead nonprofit organizations in the 21st century.

In these uncertain times, marked by recession and rapid technological change, nonprofit organizations must continually adapt if they are to thrive. Social Innovation and Impact in Nonprofit Leadership, written by leading experts in the field, provides a comprehensive framework drawn from their own experiences on ways to run and manage innovative and impactful nonprofits in this new age.

The book offers readers the tools needed to affect social change through ethical practices, business strategies, social marketing and policy analysis across government, nonprofits and philanthropy, with topics including:

  • How nonprofits can ensure their commitment to principles of accountability, ethics, transparency and good governance
  • What makes a "next-generation nonprofit"
  • How 21st-century nonprofits decide what funding models to adopt
  • Cost-effective marketing approaches nonprofits can pursue in the age of social media
  • Ways to ensure the mission is integrated into their marketing and what partnerships will make for successful cause marketing

Additionally, the book contains organizational case studies, illustrating how organizations have adapted to the complex new nonprofit environment, while remaining true to their missions to make social change locally, regionally and beyond.

Co-editors Nicholas Torres and Tine Hansen-Turton explain, "Social Innovation and Impact in Nonprofit Leadership is the most comprehensive book yet written on social innovation and social impact, describing how businesses, nonprofits and government are coming together to create social enterprises defined by a blending of financial investments and social impact."

"Social Innovation and Impact in Nonprofit Leadership is filled with insights from leaders who embody the spirit of innovation, flexibility and resilience nonprofits need today," said Diana Aviv, Independent Sector President and CEO. "These leaders have built adaptable, learning-focused and meaningfully networked organizations that are flourishing. Their experience will not only prepare the reader to face the new challenges confronting nonprofit leaders, but to embrace the new possibilities available."

About the Philadelphia Social Innovations Lab

The Philadelphia Social Innovations Lab (PSIL) nurtures social enterprise models from ideas to implementation: a low-risk opportunity to test, vet, and bring to implementation, strong ideas. The Lab's goal is to increase the chances that the strongest ideas of Social Innovators will take root, attract capital, and ultimately have a significant social impact regionally, nationally, and internationally. Selected participants from a competitive screening process and diverse sector cohorts of private, government, and nonprofit organizations will refine and test proposals, research and tap into external resources, and build the necessary infrastructure to get their idea or organization up and running. PSIL is a partnership between the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal and the University of Pennsylvania, Fels Institute of Government, PennDesign and PennPraxis.
