The Key West City Commission Names Author Rosalind Brackenbury as Key West Poet Laureate

The Key West City Commission recently honored one of the island's most respected writers, naming Rosalind Brackenbury as the Key West Poet Laureate.

Brackenbury came to Key West in 1992 after publishing her first poetry collection - as well as her first novel - in the UK.

For 20 years she has written, taught poetry classes, and championed creative writing. She is a member of the American Academy of Poets and of the Authors' Guild.

Brackenbury gave a "heartfelt" thanks to the city commission for her appointment as Poet Laureate. "This is a great honor in the city of Elizabeth Bishop and Tennessee Williams," she said, a trace of her British roots still discernable in her voice, "especially to someone with an accent like mine. This is an honor to poetry and to myself."

Her novel Circus at the End of the World shows her love of words and language and budding romance. This is the mesmerizing story a boy's search for his mother, a woman's desire to explore the world, and a man's longing for love. It begins and ends in Tasmania as the 20th Century becomes the 21st and includes juggling, magic and teenage romance.
