Xlibris announced today the publication of "The Art of Saas," a short primer on the fundamentals of building and running a healthy SaaS business. Authored by two passionate evangelists and practitioners in the Software as a Service (SaaS) movement, "The Art of SaaS" succinctly reveals the essence of the SaaS way of doing business.
"There was no book out there that boiled down to its core essence what it took to build a SaaS business," said co-author Ahmed Bouzid, "so we decided to write one." Mr. Bouzid added, "the terms 'SaaS' and 'Cloud' are being bandied about to refer to so many different things, that they have nearly lost all useful meaning."
"At Angel.com," co-author David Rennyson said, "we had the fortunate opportunity to build a SaaS business nearly from scratch, and to witness its evolution through its various phases, from a tiny nearly no-revenue start up, to a fully differentiated, Enterprise grade, profitable business. We learned a lot during the intervening years and we are writing this book to share our learning."
According to the authors, "SaaS is a way of being. It is a way of life, a world conception, a paradigm and an ecosystem. Some even say that SaaS is a religion," rather than simply yet "another software delivery configuration or a set of features in a continuum of alternatives." The book methodically demonstrates how SaaS is a business model in its own right "that requires interlocking functions that combine to enable the delivery of the SaaS promise."
The book expounds on "the SaaS promise, which is the bold proposition made by the vendor to their customers that the vendor will deliver highly reliable access to highly usable software through a simple web browser, available from anywhere at anytime." The authors hope that the book will help dispel the fog of confusion and clearly differentiate between not only SaaS and the traditional software installation model, but between SaaS and its cousins, "Cloud Solutions," "Hosted offerings" and "Managed services."
