Teri Metcalf Announces RAMBLER ROSE

COLLEGE STATION, Texas

When first approached about writing a family history, author Teri Metcalf declined. But as she thought about her childhood and all the colorful relatives in her California family tree, it occurred to her that she could write a lively and engaging story. As she began digging into her memories about key events in her early years, she gained a better understanding of how those experiences shaped her and her understanding of the world.

Her new book, "Rambler Rose" (published by Xlibris) is a coming of age story set in coastal California during the 1950s-1960s. It chronicles a tale of family relationships, American pop and political culture and race and religion. This unforgettable journey begins in the southern California communities of San Fernando and Carpinteria and moves to the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1950s.

Her family put down roots in a Mountain View prune orchard when that small agricultural community was beginning its transition to becoming the heart of Silicon Valley. She arrived in Berkeley right after the Free Speech Movement, and describes her interactions with students who had participated in the historic sit-in at the University of California's Sproul Hall where they demanded their constitutional right of freedom of speech on the campus.

Metcalf believes her story will resonate with readers who are interested in attitudes towards gender, race, class and religion as they were 60 years ago. She adds, "These issues created friction in our family. We've made progress, but society continues to struggle with these very same issues."

Teri Metcalf is retired after nearly 20 years of educational research and development at Texas A&M University. She and her husband, Bob Presley, live in College Station.
