Teachers Bring Linda Hubalek's Pioneer Books to Classrooms

Engaging students and keeping them interested in reading and studying history can be a challenge. Teachers are using Linda Hubalek's historical fiction book series about Kansas pioneers to carry students back in time for a great history lesson.

"I'd heard back from teachers that have used these books for history units. Their students become involved in the stories, wondered what happened next, and traced the characters' journeys as their class project. Photographs, maps, and family charts in the books make history and the characters come alive to the students, and help teachers form lesson plans," said Ms. Hubalek.

Hubalek's Butter in the Well book series shows students what life was like for the early pioneers that settled the Plains states. This series is written in the form of a diary, so a teacher can easily read a section each day and talk about what was happening within the family, how they cooked, traveled, and communicated during the time period of 1868-1919.

The third book, Egg Gravy, is a reading cookbook, taking quotes from the first two books in the Butter in the Well series that pertain to food and then followed with the recipe. Whether the recipe is for floor paint or angel food cake, students learn how the pioneers made everything they needed and consumed.

The Planting Dreams book series describe why, and how, people in the 1800's left Sweden to find a new beginning for themselves and their families. Discussions on why immigrants wanted to leave, what to expect, and how it would feel to never see their country or family again, make students think about their current lives and how it would be drastically changed. When realizing this family did not speak English when arriving to America, the book series help students see the problems current students recently emigrating from other countries face today.

"The book series are appropriate for grade school through college students to study the different aspects of pioneer life and immigration," said Ms. Hubalek.
