SACRAMENTO, Calif.

A young woman reflects on her unique and bittersweet childhood in author Renita J. Taylor's new novel "Trials and Tribulations: The Story of a Lost Soul" (published by AuthorHouse).

Monique Fisher reminisces about her childhood spent with her flamboyant grandfather, Grandpa Mike. Grandpa Mike raised her in San Francisco with help from his "main lady," Ms. Kandy. This pair leads a flamboyant lifestyle that is sometimes at odds with what Monique needs. In the course of living with her grandfather, Monique is exposed to pimps, prostitutes and many other interesting characters. She grows up with a strong resolve, but she faces many difficult situations.

"In today's society, so many people are going through trials and tribulations, whether it is losing a job, a life partner or a home," Taylor says. "People can relate to Monique for being brave and not giving up. Life will have many ups and downs, but the key is to not let it keep you down."

"I walked into my grandpa's room, and Ms. Kandy was gone. He was just laying there not really moving, just watching TV. I said, 'Good morning, Grandpa, how are you feeling this morning?'
He replied, 'I'm making it the best way I know how.'
I asked him, 'Do you want anything to eat or drink?'
He said no, he didn't want to eat anything.
I said, 'Grandpa, the doctor says you have to try and eat some soup. It's good for you.'
Grandpa said, 'Well, if it's so good for you, why I keep throwing stuff up? I don't want to eat.' He added, 'You got to get yourself a job or something. You can't keep trying to take care of me. I got Ms. Kandy here; you need to have a life of your own. You need to start having fun again.'"
