ATHENS, Greece

In "Tortured Innocence" (published by iUniverse), author Nikiforos Vourakis' new coming-of-age novel, readers are transported to high school where teenage angst, worry and happiness dance hand-in-hand.

On top of the stress of being a teenager and finding a place in the world, Chris battles to remember his past as a result of amnesia. After a failed confession to a classmate, Chris finds himself drifting back towards his ex, Rachael. Chris does not remember why they broke up, but after a kiss, he decides they need to get back together. As his memory slowly returns, he has a feeling that there is an important letter that will help him remember everything. One night, Rachael stumbles upon a letter and loses herself. It seems the letter confesses Chris' love for another. After Chris looks over the letter, he decides it is time to talk with that individual. If that is not perplexing enough for him, Rachael forgives him a couple days later and then a new classmate confesses his love towards Chris.

"Tortured Innocence" takes a look at a stage in life filled with confusion as people move from being children to young adult. It addresses the acceptance and understanding of one another no matter the circumstances. Vourakis hopes that his coming-of-age novel will help inspire readers with its embracing message.

An excerpt from "Tortured Innocence":

"We leave the school and go home. After that, all day I am wondering what kind of guys Veronica may like. Finally, it's night, and I can put the whole thing to rest. I lie on my bed, and I close my eyes for a couple of seconds. In my head, a letter pops up, and I feel that it is important for some reason. I sit on the edge of the bed and try to figure out if it means anything important. I can't figure anything out. I will stress about it tomorrow."
