TOPICS IN ARITHMETIC Joins Illinois Library Association Book Exhibit, 10/15

Illiteracy, in both words and numbers, has become a national concern. While teaching, seasoned educator and mathematician Terence H. Murdock had to deal with students who lacked adequate knowledge of the fundamentals of mathematics. To help address this growing concern, Murdock publishes an effective and practical book that explains arithmetic processes to students, parents and teachers, titled Topics in Arithmetic.

Topics in Arithmetic is a collection of six studies in the fundamentals of arithmetic: (1) Simple Deductive Logic, (2) Number and Numeration, (3) The Basics of Arithmetic, (4) Understanding Arithmetic Algorithms, (5) Fractions and Decimals, and (6) Powers and Roots. Fundamentals are stressed. Murdock realizes that good mathematical thinking begins with elementary concepts and is developed from an early age.

This is not a textbook. There are no assignments; and no tests. It requires only a voluntary effort to read about topics in arithmetic that are interesting and enlightening. It is meant to augment, not replace, conventional textbooks. It is not a superficial treatment of elementary mathematics. It is directed at serious students, parents and teachers. It explains basic mathematics clearly and with insightful perspectives.

The education system is in trouble and there are scandalous numbers of school dropouts. About the Author
Terence Harvey Murdock has a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics from Florida Institute of Technology. While a graduate student, he developed and taught graduate courses in linear algebra, matrices, and mathematics for managers. He was a systems analyst in the mathematical services department of RCA Services Company at Cape Canaveral, Fla. He retired in 1991 as a manager in the network provisioning department of Bell South Corporation in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. For schools in Tampa, Fla., he developed and taught undergraduate courses in developmental mathematics, finite mathematics, statistics and algebra. "Topics in Arithmetic" and "Topics in Algebra" are books that reflect his concern for students, parents, and teachers over difficulties they have with certain facets of mathematics. He is writing a third book: "Topics Beyond Algebra."
