THE TURNING STONE Tackles Bullying

Author Lauresa Tomlinson understands the pain bullying inflicts. The author had to deal with this torment through most of her school years. Having found the strength to overcome this pain, Tomlinson wrote her new book, "The Turning Stone" (published by Archway Publishing), which teaches about bullying through the use of an old American Indian story.

Swift Bow Barnet, who is called Bow, is 9 years old. He is often teased at school due to his mixed heritage and Native American roots. In an effort to learn more about his people, Bow goes to work with his dad, who is an archaeologist. While he and his dad are spelunking, Bow meets an old shaman who shows him ancient magic and teaches him the meaning of ancient symbols found in the cave.

Tomlinson says her book is about perseverance as it looks at a young boy who overcomes his tormentors and claims his heritage.

"I would like to let everyone know that there is still hope and solutions to everyday problems and that sometimes being different is a blessing and what makes them special," Tomlinson says.

An excerpt from "The Turning Stone":

"My quiet thoughts were interrupted by a flash of light. I had to blink, it was so bright. As I opened my eyes, there in front of me stood Soaring Snow Eagle, just like one of those genies in a bottle.
'Do you have a question for me?' he asked, looking down at me with a smile."
