MILTON ERNEST, England

Author Sheila Roy has battled with Parkinson's disease for a third of her life. Her condition gradually worsened over time, and by 2010, "the deterioration was accelerating like a plane crashing to earth, and being unable to stop," she says.

No longer recognizable as the person she once knew, Sheila lost confidence, dignity and hope. She became invisible to others and stopped going out and mixing with friends. She was dull and boring and her head felt "full of cotton wool and fog."

This all changed in July 2011, when she became one of 15 people in the world to have Prosavin injected into her brain. The modified equine virus first acted as a Trojan horse to get the genes to where they needed to be and now acts as a dopamine factor, producing the missing drug deep into the striatum of the brain. Sheila received the highest dose.

Three years later, her fog is clearing. Sheila sees her new book, "The Surprise Package" (published by AuthorHouse UK), as an example of how much she has improved both physically and mentally. It the first creative writing that she has been able to do in nearly 20 years.

This small, illustrated book tells the story of a baby left on a doorstep in a pink and white bag. Although it is only 596 words long, the picture book deals with just a few, very dramatic, life-changing moments for John and Sarah Yorr.

"This illustrated book is designed to build on the drama of the situation making the reader experience anxiety, sadness and joy, and to be eager to turn over to the next page," Roy says. "This continues throughout the book with an ending that leaves them asking for more."

The Prosavin gene therapy trial was quite experimental but has proven to be very successful upon review in The Lancet, and life-changing for Sheila Roy.
