NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Grayce Presnar was inspired to write "The Scout Is Out" (published by Xlibris) because one of her grandchildren was afraid of crawling insects. She wanted to teach him that there was nothing to fear, that they were likely more afraid of him, and so created a story that showed the world through an ant's perspective.

An excerpt from the book reads:
"Go out! Go out! You are our scout. / We need a place to live. / The rains have come. Our home's undone. / The ground is like a sieve. / We need to try to get it dry. / Something's got to give! / We count on you to see it through. / We need a place to live."

In the book, an ant colony is threatened by heavy flooding due to torrential rains. Faced with this catastrophic threat, they sent Timmy out to find a new home for their colony. It did not take him long to find a house nearby, but his adventures have just begun. Though an ordinary house by human standards, Timmy's forays into the different parts of the house reveal a different world to that experienced by people. Even the most ordinary things, like house pets and some critters, take on a new and frightening appearance when taken from the perspective of a diminutive ant.

"Every now and then we need to stop and face the things or people we dislike or fear the most and put ourselves in their shoes," wrote Presnar. "When we do this, many times we will learn that they have the same fears and anxieties that we do."

"The Scout Is Out" is a tale meant to encourage children to see things from both sides and to see that their fears may not be as great as imagined. It is also a lesson in respecting other's boundaries.
