The Photographer's Boy follows the story of an aged veteran who, in 1863, had been a photographer during the US Civil War. There, he falls foul of an ancient and vengeful rival determined to discredit and humiliate him while uncovering his shocking civil war secret. Stephen Bates is a British journalist and author who has been visiting Gettysburg for more than 30 years and is fascinated by American history. He was a journalist for 36 years until 2012, working for the BBC, Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail before joining the Guardian in 1990 where he was subsequently education editor, political correspondent, European Affairs Editor and finally the paper's religious affairs and royal correspondent.

He reported from more than 40 countries, was named British religion writer of the year in 2005 and 2006 and is the author of three previous books: A Church at War: Anglicans and Homosexuality (Hodder and Stoughton); Asquith (Haus), a biography of the Edwardian prime minister and God's Own Country: Religion and Politics in the US (Hodder and Stoughton).
