In his book, The Message of Pain: A Whisper of Hope, Gavin Hooks writes about the phenomenon of pain and its causes, effects and meaning in the context of a Christian worldview. Hooks offers insight into how a past painful experience can negatively influence behavior and decisions. He also provides guidance in healing.

"Half of all American marriages end in divorce. This book helps in surviving this ordeal and then healing," Hooks said. "It is also an aid to anyone who has experienced a major traumatic event in their life: physical abuse, psychological abuse, abandonment, alcohol abuse."

Hooks writes that understanding a painful event and seeing it in context of the battle between good and evil will bring peace and healing. He offers practical definitions for good and evil, including a description of the Bible's account of the origins of good and evil.

"The inability to discern good from evil objectively, using a reference other than ourselves, leads to a life of pain," Hooks said. "Pain is a faithful messenger. It is relentless in notifying us that something is wrong. God designed pain into the system of life to protect us."

Hooks shares the one appropriate response to painful experiences (physical, psychological and spiritual) and how to start living a meaningful life of healing using Biblical models. His goal is to help Christians and non-Christians alike articulate a clear understanding of why there is evil in this world and how to avoid the harm that comes with it.

"Meaningful life involves understanding the contest between good and evil and choosing to join the side of good."
