According to Endangered Species International there are 5,614 different endangered species in Africa, many of which border on extinction at this very moment.
Wildlife photographer Dinesh Patel has spent over 50 years traveling from the Serengeti plains all the way to the Kidepo Valley to capture rare glimpses of the vibrant wildlife of Africa. His passion for the creatures captured in his lens has kept him on safari for most of his life in the hopes of bringing awareness to the conservation efforts Africa so desperately needs.
Patel's new book, "The Journey Within," is more than a mere collection of photos, but the fulfillment of his greatest wish to take every person on a safari, so they can experience the beauty of Africa. With advanced Parkinson's disease, Patel can no longer take people on safari and has opted to turn this book into his greatest conservation effort bringing global awareness to the needs of these majestic creatures that most people only think of as a zoo attraction.
"I am tortured by the probability that in less than a generation or two, some of these exquisite animals I have had the privilege to see will be gone," Patel said. "This book is but a small contribution, a blade of grass on Serengeti's vast plains, to the noble objective of conserving Earth's natural magnificence."
Due to the photographers advanced illness, his longtime friend Praful Patel has edited the book and taken up the mantle of spreading the word by sharing this powerful book. As the former Vice President of the World Bank, Praful is attuned to many of the problems facing animals and people around the world. His philanthropic passions and companionship with Dinesh have given him the fiery vigor to build awareness for the dying wildlife of Africa.
