ORLAND PARK, Ill.

Author Gregory Smith takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster with his realistic, new, family-oriented novel that will tug at readers heartstrings, "The Joneses" (published by iUniverse).

Mike Jones has been a bachelor for a long time when his long-ago ex-girlfriend Lindsey leaves a gift on his doorstep: a 10-year-old son named Jeremy. Mike feels cornered, angry and terrified at the prospect of being forced into a fatherhood he neither wanted nor expected - and Jeremy isn't exactly clear on the new arrangement either.

As Mike reexamines his selfish life while getting to know his son, he even starts looking at Lindsey in a different way. But doubt gets in the way as he wonders how much he can alter his life without it falling apart.

A fictional novel based on potentially real situations, "The Joneses" offers life lessons and, in the end, a story that will make readers feel good about how things turned out.

An excerpt from "The Joneses":

"Jeremy sits there quietly eating his cereal, slurping the milk with each and every spoonful. It is unimaginable that anyone would blame this innocent child for being confused about what's happening now. He's never met his father, was raised by his mother, with the help of others, and now has the dubious honor of hand-delivering this note to a man who wants nothing to do with him. No wonder he seems shy and scared. It's fear of rejection."
