Sausalito is a wealthy city that has been in transition for decades and is trying to forget its sordid past. But what happens when this past is revisited through stories of love and tragedy and brought back to light?
"The House of Pearl," a new novel from author Robert Bovill, is a satirical ghost story of adventure, redemption, love and open-mindedness that explores an old Victorian house built in the 1800s on the Sausalito waterfront. The novel features historical characters, such as Mark Twain and Jack London, and highlights scenes from feudal Japan to marauding coastal pirates to the hippy days of the '60s.
"The story covers 120 years of different people living in the house I owned and renovated," Bovill said. "You wouldn't believe the colorful stories I heard from previous owners."
Writing a novel was a new direction for Bovill, since his career has long been art direction. That said, from his time working on the Oscar-nominated film Beaches to his work as a technician on Star Wars Return of the Jedi, Bovill excels at visual storytelling and translates that talent into the imagery in "House of Pearl".
