Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that causes red blood cells to be shaped like a sickle, as opposed to their regular donut shape. These misshaped cells can lead to blocked blood flow, organ damage and excruciating pain. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), 70,000-100,000 Americans suffer from sickle cell anemia. Author Elvelyna B. Beaubrun is one of these Americans.

Beaubrun tells her inspiring story in her new memoir "The Girl with the Lion Heart: "The Resilient Life of a Champion" Vol. 1 Based on a True Story" (published by Trafford Publishing), in which she discusses her battle with sickle cell anemia and the courage it has given her. It is her hope to raise awareness of this condition worldwide. Beaubrun was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia when she was an infant and has fought with the disorder her entire life. Despite the pain the disease carries with it, Beaubrun said she never let it break her or keep her down; she used the disease to make her stronger.

Throughout "The Girl with the Lion Heart" - recipient of Trafford's Gold Seal of Literary Excellence - readers will watch Beaubrun overcome her struggles with sickle cell anemia, while still pursuing her dreams and accomplishing great things. She hopes that her story will inspire in all people the hope that anything is possible if one puts their mind and heart into it. In keeping with this mindset, Beaubrun is pursuing her goal of making a difference by touching the lives of others through her inspiring memoir.

An excerpt from "The Girl with the Lion Heart":

"I can remember as a young child growing up, my parents have always taught me to achieve and strive for everything in life to my fullest potential. They have bestowed so many morals and values upon me which have enabled me to be a strong, dedicated, determined, confident, and intelligent young lady that I am today. I have learned so much in my life through struggles, trials, and tribulations that I can do anything."

With "The Girl with the Lion Heart," Beaubrun hopes to raise awareness for sickle cell anemia worldwide. Her second goal is that her memoir can become a movie in efforts to inspire others with sickle cell anemia and other debilitating illnesses. In addition, she wants others to vividly see what it is like living with sickle cell anemia, struggling throughout her obstacle, yet determined to reach her goals and aspirations in life.
