Suspenseful, Dramatic Two-Part Memoir Seeks Correction of Past Mistakes

A young woman born in a suburbia valley of Rio de Janeiro marries a flamboyant Italian man, whom she thought was her prince, finds her assumption was wrong...in Intriguing Way to Succeed, Paula does not know the extent to which her new husband Antonio has gone but she will soon find out. Lea de Paiva then chronicles her upbringing and life prior to the madness Paula experienced with Antonio in My Poor Life. Behind the exotic postcard locales of Brazil, the author writes of life in Rio de Janeiro's vast slums. In this second portion, details her early life of poverty in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. It was a hand to mouth existence, especially as her father Jose Paiva (a lieutenant in the air force) was consumed by his lust for wine and women and left when she was very young. It is, in effect, the prequel to the first part of the memoir.

When Paula discovers that her husband Antonio wants to use her as a victim in his evil plan she regrets the day she married him. She does not understand how a man that called her 'Mio Tesoro' was now trying to jeopardize her life to steal one and a half million dollars. After many attempts to persuade her to go along with his plan, he tells her that he has given up and regrets trying to involve her. Paula believes him and they fly to Brazil to convince her family that everything is fine between them. That is when the drama begins. While trying to return to the United States, Paula and Antonio are captured at gun point on their way to the Galeon airport in Rio. After believing that her husband is dead, she tries to escape the kidnappers in the jungle surrounding the mountains of Petropolis. She later discovers that Antonio is mastermind of the entire evil plot.

Taken together, the two-part memoir (fictionalized and real) tells of an intelligent and moral woman who made the wrong choices but would later be able to correct them. Does her early life presage the calm before the storm of a tumultuous married life to a con-man/Mafioso like husband? Readers will find out in this intriguingly crafted memoir of a woman with an ear, heart, and eye for the story well-told. Lea de Paiva says in retrospect: "I wrote about my life with one goal in mind: To remember that good people want to do the right thing, but sometimes we cannot."

Lea Maria de Paiva was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on April 23, 1957. She lived most of her life in the suburban valley of Rio. She moved to the United States almost twenty-two years ago, and she is still living in the same town, in Florida. In 2003, the author decided to write a book about her life when she was recovering from complications from surgery. She wrote out of desperation in being without her children for so long. The motivation to write her story came from the amazing Oprah Winfrey, who encouraged her viewers to write about their lives. The beautiful things she (Oprah) did for so many people while her show was on the air touched de Paiva. She hopes this book reaches the hands of others who are having a hard time in life, and hopes it gives them the courage and confidence to push through and gain the life they want.
