Suellen Holland marks her publishing debut with the release of "Black Sand and Betel Nut" (published by Balboa Press AU), a memoir chronicling her experiences as a European child living in pre-independent Papua New Guinea, holding a unique place in history.

When her family moved again from Australia to Papua New Guinea in 1960, little did Holland know the land and its people would change her life dramatically, mold and shape her character, and bring her adventures and experiences beyond belief.

"Black Sand and Betel Nut" details her childhood in Rabaul, the town she grew up in, that was completely wiped out by a volcanic eruption in 1994. Holland's candid collection of stories recall the halcyon days of her childhood and pays tribute to a place she will always call home.

"There are only a few books written about pre-independent Papua New Guinea. 'Black Sand and Betel Nut' offers an insight to a different way of life," the author shares. "It is for a life so very different from the normal."
