Successful Urologist Delves into Experience Living with Bipolar... Image A physician has released his educational and entertaining memoir that twines the author's experiences being diagnosed with and treated for bipolar disorder at age 39 with compelling stories about his memories of growing up in Charleston, W. Va., his service as a Navy doctor with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and the lessons he learned as he grew in his career as a successful urologist.

In "A Surgeon's Life with Bipolar Disorder," author John A. Emery, MD, meanders through a diverse array of topics, from surgical techniques used during the Civil War to sports medicine to the author's experiences treating patients as a budding doctor in Los Angeles during the 1965 Watts riots, and educates readers about the innerworkings of bipolar disorder, dispelling stigma that is often attached to the disease and the people who have it.

"My hope is that this book will enhance your knowledge of bipolar disorder and other medical conditions I have encountered during my life," Dr. Emery said.

"Everyone can benefit from these stories and insights from Dr. Emery," a reader wrote in a five-star Amazon review of "A Surgeon's Life with Bipolar Disorder". "I recommend reading the book!"

Peppered with nostalgic photos from Dr. Emery's life and his insights into some of recent history's most defining moments, "A Surgeon's Life with Bipolar Disorder" uses the author's knowledgeable medical perspective and personal mental health experiences to present an apt commentary on how media misrepresentations of bipolar disorder continue to harm people who have the disease in all aspects of life.
