Author Stanley Fenton believes that love is an inspiring quality but an unbearably painful one when it is taken from you. He felt that impact of losing someone when he was 11 years old after his mother's death. In his new publication, he recounts his growing up years in Lord Howe Island narrating his adventures and misadventures. What a Ride! chronicles his journey from a child who lost his parent, to a young man who was sent off to Vietnam to fight a war, highlighting his struggle against depression after twenty years.

His childhood days were very memorable, albeit a little sheltered since he stayed in the same island until the time when he joined the troop. In 1961, he saw a posting to the RAAF Base at Amberley in Queensland. He joined No. 482 Maintenance Squadron where he became familiar with major servicing of Canberra aircraft.

He undertook courses in flying an aircraft, and between his trainings and commitments, he met Heather. They became engaged and eventually got married a short time before he was sent to Vietnam. He went back home a completely different man. He found it difficult to talk about war, so he decided to keep it to himself. It was not until twenty years later that he felt the effects of his haunting experiences. He fell into depression.

The events that probably have most influenced his life have been the early death of his mother, his involvement in the Vietnam War, the births of his two children, and his divorce. His mother's death when he was 11 left a vacuum in the area of motherly love and marred his ability for many years to experience true love. The impact of the Vietnam War caught up with him eventually. Guilt, regret, injustice, confusion, worthlessness-all descended on him. His marriage failed, his daughter rejected him, and he seriously contemplated suicide. He struggled to rise up from the abyss of depression, trying to pick up the pieces and put his life together.

What a Ride! is a courageous account of a man who has been through so much in life, owning up to his mistakes along the way and starting all over again despite the many trials and obstacles. He appreciates the memories he has, learns from the past and accepts the changes that came his way.
