Author Stanley A. Fry uses a relatable protagonist to show how the power of prayer provides strength and answers to life's most difficult questions in his new novel, "Wrestling with God: A Book of Uncommon Prayer" (published by iUniverse).

Set in the fictional small town of Archer, N.Y., "Wrestling with God" tells the story of Jason Corliss, a young family man working at a bank who struggles with trials that will be familiar to all walks of life. He seeks guidance from his pastor, his wife and others close to him, but his life doesn't really begin to change until he learns how to harness the power of prayer.

"Prayer is often more of a wrestling match with God than it is a question-and-answer interview," Fry says. "The bulk of this story is made up of the prayers Jason makes and the ways in which his prayers are answered."

An excerpt from "Wrestling with God":

"Well Father, I know well enough that there are a million things I don't understand about you. And I just hope you'll keep opening things up to me as long as I live. I sure don't want to get stuck somewhere along the way and think I've finally got you in my pocket. So please, keep me open and searching so I won't be afraid of discovering something new. I think I really need help with that. I always seem to get tense when something unfamiliar confronts me. Anyway, I won't ever be able to get away from you, and you can't ever get rid of me either. Amen."
