In his fast-paced new novel "Spare Not the Rod" (published by Balboa Press), author Leonard Tolbert explores the themes of friendship, loyalty and growing up in a story filled with adventure, humor, tragedy, action and the phenomenon of Texas high school football.
Jake Boddine was always seen as an outcast in his small west Texas town, a loner with no friends who was prone to getting into fights. His life is forever changed when he meets four slightly younger guys, striking up a friendship with them that completely changes their lives and the lives of everyone around them. Jake's life suddenly became more exciting and filled with social activities.
As the years passed, Jake and his friends learn important lessons about love, loss, tragedy and redemption. As they cope with the changes of growing up in a world filled with uncertainty, the one thing they know is that no matter how tough things get, they always have each other's backs.
"This is a story of the experiences that many young men live through," Tolbert writes. "It is a story of great friendship and the sharing of life's ups and downs. A good dose of the emotional side of football is included."
