A Greenville author has released her debut novel that homes in on the big questions of life, love and humanity. A fascinating page-turner with an unusual plot, "All That Really Mattered," by J.A. Barker, presents readers with a wonderful love story like no other.

In the book, aging neuroscientist Andrew Hamilton agrees to undergo a procedure to have his brain transplanted into the body of a younger man - an operation he is certain he will not survive. However, after unexpectedly awakening in his new body, Hamilton must face the unforeseen consequences of his transformation: the loss of his identity and all that he holds dear, including his beloved wife.

"I have long been interested in the way we see and fail to see one another and how that failure becomes a part of who we are," Barker said. "As we live our lives we gather the trappings others have pinned on us, and our struggles to free ourselves of these narratives, false or otherwise, shape our personalities and our characters and often determine our destinies. I explore this idea quite literally in 'All That Really Mattered.'"

"… with her solid science background, Barker creates a very real and compelling world," a BlueInk reviewer wrote about the book. "The plot moves quickly and the characters are well-drawn, making this first novel an enjoyable read that foretells more promising work to come from this author."

"All That Really Mattered" stirs up the essential questions of what makes a person who they are, what gives meaning to life and whether death can conquer an eternal bond of love. Perfect for book clubs, Barker's novel will leave readers with plenty to chew on.
