Soul-searching of 'Angel' Depicted in Book

Teaching bright female students inspired R.E. Braithwaite to explore the first generation raised during the "Women's Liberation" and "Sexual Liberation" movements. With this, Braithwaite wrote "Angel: A Chant of Paradise" (published by Archway Publishing), a fictional narrative that explores how love "waxes and wanes" and how difficult it is to be a woman in strange times.

According to Braithwaite, "Angel" is about a college guy who loves women and literature. He goes to Dartmouth College at the end of the '60s, and he has burned out on politics, so he turns to sex, drugs, rock and roll, and literature. He describes the book as a "bawdy tragicomedy."

"Comedy is, ultimately, based on compassion. In classical comedy, the characters screw up just as much as they do in tragedy, but the gods forgive us our folly. Angel forgives nearly everyone. The only way to incur his wrath is to hurt a woman. Thus, there are few villains. The book loves nearly all of its characters, even the self-centered ones," Braithwaite expresses.

"Angel" blends sex, drugs, comedy and literary influences into a wild brew as a Dartmouth student embarks on a journey of self-discovery during 1970s America.
