'Social Change Through Training and Education: Volume III' Released Image Having served in the police profession in patrol, leadership and administrative capacities for more than four decades, Dr. E. Beverly Young became distressed over media reports describing negative encounters depicting the negative relationship between police officers and members of the community. She believed the encounters leading to eroding relationships resulted from a lack of communication, in some instances unwillingness on both sides to understand the need and purpose behind ongoing communication, engagement and transparency for procedural justice and legitimacy. This belief led her to write "Social Change Through Training and Education: Volume III- The 'Clothing' for Effective Policing: Cultural Competency, Spirituality and Ethics (Cultural Competency Self-Assessment Tool Included)" (published by AuthorHouse).

The book gives readers an opportunity to learn something about themselves. It serves as an opportunity to move from opaqueness to transparency about what one believes and thinks when encountering diversity personally and professionally. It is also a personal exploration of one's response when encountering implicit or from explicit bias in a colleague or family members during a family gathering.

"The police officer is similar to the resident of any community. Both possess a spiritual, emotional and intellectual dimension and should be understood and treated in that way," Young points out. "Readers must distinguish behavior of some from hiring practices that may not be able to identify individuals who are not best suited as police officers."

"A police officer is a person before she/he performs tasks associated with a profession. Treat and understand that the police profession involves solving problems using split-second decision making skills, not necessarily intended to nor appropriate for correcting systemic social issues."
