Sharon Pelphrey's new book, "Honor et Gloria: Poetry of the Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis" (published by WestBow Press) recaptures a Christian classic in the original style, unnoticed by commentators after the 12th century. "I realized no one else was going to make the text available again as the delightful epic it is," Pelphrey explains. "This amazing work is every bit as important to British Dark-Age literature as William Shakespeare is to modern English. I was thrilled to take the project on."
In 572 AD, Saint Brendan of Clonfert and a crew of 15 monks reached the Caribbean, then sailed north to the area around Newfoundland. Saint Columba of Iona wrote a poetic play in Latin about that voyage and the mysteries Brendan had discovered. "Columba was a prince and the most famous poet of Ireland," Pelphrey adds. "He brought written literature to people who had been writing only in scratches called Ogham, and gave his people the tools to read and enjoy the Latin Bible for themselves."
The stories they told and songs of Brendan flourish to this day. They give readers a precious and rare insight into the Dark Ages and the Church scattering throughout the world, as commanded. These stories were written for school children, but will sing in the hearts of all who read them. The play is composed in four acts, each with symmetrical arrangement of action, scene and characters sure to entertain and educate readers on this historical journey.
"Honor et Gloria" retells one of the earliest European accounts of a voyage to the Americas. Pelphrey's English translation of Columba's work is also available, titled "O Honored Father: Theater of the Voyage of Holy Abbot Brendan."
