According to author Sereta Belgrave, most of the people will agree that the socialization process as a child is pivotal to the personalities one develops and the person one ultimately become later in life. In her new publication, she weaves an unforgettable story of a woman who has been through the worst of life's experiences, and still admirably managed to get through and find peace within her with Growing Up in Barbados.
Set in the idyllic and beautiful island of Barbados, in the fifties, this book tells of one woman's endearing story. Louise is the youngest of six siblings. Each of them has a different father, and their mother Naomi raised them all single-handedly. Even as a child, there is something different from Louise. She is more beautiful than any of her siblings, and her complexion is lighter which is unusual in a village dominated by people of African descent. She is a rather withdrawn child who feels sad because of the lack of father figure in her life.
Louise has a zeal and dedication for her studies. She aces her class, despite the bullying she got from other kids at school. One day, her mother introduces to them a new man in their lives. His name is Geoffrey. This change in their lives becomes the reason why Louise's hatred and lack of trust for men resurfaced. That experience paves a way for her to be wild. She is no longer the same Louise. She basks with the power she has over men, dominating them by using her charms as a woman. Many obstacles befall Louise that seems life is hopeless for her, until she meets Raymond. Is there a chance of happiness for Louise after all?
Growing Up in Barbados is a promising novel that will surely appeal to every heart, inspiring the readers in seeing the beauty in this world and embrace life with a passion that can cast out the worst that they have been through.
