Seasoned Finance Exec Shows How to Find Success in Failure Image Former Citibank and American Express executive Robert V. Sicina has spent fifteen years teaching about decision making at the American University Kogod School of Business.

Inspired by his students, Professor Sicina has released a new book, "Learn from Failure: The Key to Successful Decision Making." In it, Sicina explains what drives failed decisions and links sound leadership and management skills to successful decision making.

"In order to learn from failed decisions," Sicina said, "one must understand what causes them. As I uncovered the key drivers of failure in decision-making, I was able to develop prescriptive measures for effectively dealing with them. I share those measures in this book."

As part of his coursework at American University, Professor Sicina leads student teams that help entrepreneurs in post-conflict regions create business plans.

"The problems and the solutions related to successful decision making are not complicated," Sicina said. "They are simple things that can readily be grasped and applied, but that can change a person's life in a big way. We are, after all, the sum of the decisions we make."
