Raised by parents born the year the Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union began, Sean Stewart has long been fascinated by Russia. He turns his fascination with the world's largest country into an exploration of the nation and its people, revealing his interpretation in a new book published by Dog Ear Publishing. The book is a metaphorical map, describing the key elements of what Stewart calls "the elusive Russian soul" and showing how the nation's history has shaped its current people.

From the minute he steps into his first flat in Russia, Stewart is captivated by its never-ending hot water supply, atmosphere and attitude. The book highlights Russia's early history before the 10th century and touches on rulers from the Mongols, Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great to Stalin and Lenin. The Russian desire for a powerful ruler remains from that legacy. But even as the people want a strong person in control, they resent - and sometimes resist - the government and its representatives.

In addition to facts about its politics and people, "It's Russia, My Son! A (Partial) Roadmap of the Russian Soul" includes amusing tales about Russian ingenuity and spontaneity, many of which end with the ubiquitous phrase "It's Russia." The book, poised for Dog Ear Publishing review, serves as a record of history and descriptive travelogue, showcasing attitudes about love, friendship, religion, warfare and power, all of which influence the Russian soul.

Historian Sean Stewart has lived and worked in Russia for more than a decade. The author, who grew up in Chicago and has several higher degrees in history, has traveled to nearly 60 countries. He enjoys sailing in the Mediterranean and teaching English and history when he's not traveling or writing.
