Author Sealie Vaughn West is the reader's guide through time in "Rio Tinto: Lost Coconuts" (published by AuthorHouse). Opening with ancient history based on legend, West's novel leads into his personal history of growing up in the small Honduran village of Rio Tinto.
Child abuse was common in the small Honduran village, but West realized his traumatic childhood was unique: isolated in the jungle, growing up without family, dreaming of a better life. A life that seemed unattainable, as seen in this excerpt from "Lonely Grains of White Sand," an introductory poem in the book:
"I sit here on the lonely beach watching the sun go down
as the bright orange glow fades away with each passing minute.
On top of a sand dune, looking toward the sky to see what it tells me,
No hope in sight, just looking, counting the white grains of sand,
and trying to pass the time, on this lonely beach,
the wind telling me that I will never leave, no hope in sight."
Readers will be held captive by this historical narrative of pirates, slave trading, abuse and the hope for a better life.
