September 5 is Labor Day, a day not only devoted to picnics and kicking back but to honoring the contributions of American workers. It is also a time for individuals to reflect on their careers to look at what is working and what could be better.
Sarah E. Brown, author of the upcoming book Let Your Personality Be Your Career Guide(Launching September 15 on Amazon), spent 15 years working in top management positions where she discovered a surprising truth: many people are miserable at work because they landed in the wrong jobs or never bothered to figure out what they wanted in a career. Her book aims to correct that disconnect, making laboring less laborious.
Brown, who holds a Ph.D. in PsychoEducational processes, says, "Many people are in the wrong job for their personality or don't know what makes them happy. But there are exercises they can do that can help them figure out their interests, strengths and needs. The trick is to incorporate as many of them in their jobs as they can." For example, Brown says someone who loves to spend time outdoors might move their desk so they can gaze outside as well as plan many outdoor adventures on weekends and vacations.
