[Sam Kelley, author of the nationally acclaimed [Pill Hill, returns to the world of drama with the play, White Chocolate. Here, Kelley examines the issues that confront African-Americans in contemporary society through the experiences and dynamics of a black American family struggling to find their place in small town white America.

Dubbed "a warmhearted domestic drama" by The Syracuse Newspapers, White Chocolate follows Professor Walt Williams and his wife, Ruby, who are finding out that life in small town white America is not as idyllic as it seems. Walt's preoccupation with achieving tenure in the "publish or perish" world of the academe is slowly but surely alienating him from his daughter, Lily, and son, Victor. Further complicating matters is the fact that Lily is smitten with Rich, a white teenager. Additionally, she and her college-dropout brother are assuming provincial identities that threaten to derail their father's ambitious goal of seeing them become high-powered black professionals.

A collision of richly drawn characters, White Chocolate is a story of family and culture and a modern exploration of issues such as interracial relationships and its effects both on the individuals and their respective communities. About the Author

Sam Kelley first came to the attention of the theatre community with the production of the nationally acclaimed Pill Hill, which premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre when Kelley was a playwriting student at the Yale School of Drama. In addition to his work as a playwright, Kelley has performed at the school community level for most of his life.

Kelley is also well established as a professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Cortland. He received his Ph.D. in Speech, with a concentration in Radio-TV-Film, from the U. Michigan and his MFA in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama. He earned his MA in Speech from Arkansas at Fayetteville and his BA in Speech and Drama from Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He has also studied screen writing, playwriting and Film Script development at New York University: A graduate of M. M. Tate High School in Marvell, Kelley claims Turkey Scratch, Arkansas as home.
