NAPLES, Fla.

Only 30 percent of active physicians in the United States are female, according to Physician Specialty Data Book, 2012, aamc.org. Though this number has drastically changed over the years, author Clair Callan still feels the healthcare world remains male dominant.

In the new memoir "Standing My Ground," Callan shares her journey of overcoming obstacles and cracking the glass ceiling, as she becomes a female physician.

This personal memoir sheds light on the challenges Callan faced as a woman in the healthcare industry. Her determination to improve patient safety and develop innovative approaches to healthcare inspires readers to advance in their own careers.

"Trying to progress up the management ladder in a mostly male environment wasn't easy," Callan said. "I have learned that having the courage to say 'yes' can lead you far."

Callan succeeded in proving that an anesthetic was safe, despite opposition from a key leader, and now her new memoir is a testament to not letting circumstances become limitations.
