A serial killer is on the loose, terrorizing people on both sides of the Rio Grande River. When cowboy Joe Mack, a Vietnam veteran, happens on the crime scene in a young girl's violent death, he becomes a suspect, according to this new novel from Dog Ear Publishing. Further events lead him to participate in a shootout with law enforcement, and eventually flees via horseback into the mountains. Even as he's on the run, Joe hopes he can reconcile with his estranged wife Cassie, the love of his life.
In "Shootout at Salt Flat," set in the desert land of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Salt Flats beneath the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas and the Sierra Diablo Mountains in the 1960s, the terrain and its history plays as much a role in this adventure tale as the characters and plot. Tracked by a maverick Texas Ranger, Joe encounters some unforgettable characters and allies, including a friendly Catholic priest with a past of his own, an alcoholic investigator who's trying to reform and a local law enforcement officer who's not quite ready to believe Joe committed the crime. In the end, Joe and his allies must act on faith to bring a violent monster to justice.
This is the first novel for author Lynn Chelewski, who spent more than 20 years with the National Park Service at five sites as a maintenance worker and supervisor. The Marine Corps veteran, a Nebraska native, worked twice at Guadalupe Mountains National Park in his career, spending a total of more than 13 years there, and earned several awards. He dedicated the book to Roger Reisch, the first and only employee of Guadalupe Mountains National Park in the 1960s and an inspiration to many.
