Much like a doctor must fix a broken bone before it can heal, individuals must address painful realities of their past before they can move on in life and be successful.
Inspired by her experience touring an abandoned mental institution while on a land preservation project, prior Councilwoman in Marlboro N.J. Patti Morelli wrote "Shielded Past" to highlight the difficulties that one may face, and ultimately the benefits they will reap, when confronting the details of their past.
"Acknowledging buried history and the feelings that come with that can be intimidating," Morelli says. "I want people to know that even though it can be intimidating, it's also worth it."
Morelli highlights the story of a young woman who is forced to examine the details of her upbringing in the foster care system while on a quest to uncover what is happening within the walls of the very institution Morelli explored.
"Facing realities that you have avoided for years may uncover details you wished you never knew, but it also allows you to make peace with your past, move on and be successful" Morelli says.
