Second Chances, if one is given to thinking about it deeply, are rarely found. In the high stakes world of love, Second Chances tells the story of two people who have lost their first loves, but come to possess a deeper, more intense love with one another than they ever believed possible. Linda Wilson crafts a lovely, mature story of Second Chances being just the way it is-not the same as the first chance.

Elise Cantrell, Wilson's heroine, and her new romantic interest, Alex Ford, struggle out of old lives-places of devastating loss and heartbreak which intrude upon the present at unlikely moments. Wilson creates new lives for her characters, despite the indestructible baggage of the old ones. Wilson, in an impassioned passage, illustrates the collision of the old and the new:

"Alex realized then at that moment that although Elise was beautiful, smart, and very hot, her time with Tom had robbed her of her self-esteem. It was then, at that instant,...he knew she had been abused. (No), not physically, but certainly emotionally, mentally, and probably sexually. He thought about his beautiful, sexy lady, and anger built up inside him for what she must have endured."

The thing about the past is that it haunts and the preceding passage shows Alex Ford being haunted to extreme emotion by what Elise has endured. How will all that struggle affect Elise and Alex's new lives together, if the future holds it? There is nothing funny about it-millions of lovers are right this minute trying to do what Elise and Alex are trying to do. Nothing is easy and Second Chances are rare enough. Acceptance? Willing oneself to think only of the present? It's not easy to forget what happened before. In Linda Wilson's evanescent new world for two romantic figures, true love demands letting go and finding hope and trust in one another for love to prevail.
