Taking time to study abroad is a common practice in the modern day. It's not uncommon to hear a student say they wished they could stay at their destination forever. Well, young Barton Carter did exactly that when he visited Spain in 1936 and his desire to stay led to over 4,000 lives being saved.
Upon a visit to Barcelona Carter saw the ravages of Civil War and horrors of Fascism tearing a people apart. He was so distraught that he turned against his wealthy family's wishes and remained in Spain to volunteer his services. He became an administrator at four different orphanages transporting children and refugees safely from location to location in order to avoid loss of life in battles.
Carter's niece Nancy Clough has been studying his life for several years. She has collected letters, diaries, brochures, newspaper articles and personal anecdotes from those who knew him in her new book, "Searching for Barton Carter."
"My family seldom mentioned Barton's name when I was a child and it appeared to me that my uncle's life was somehow secretive and mysterious," Clough said. "As I got older and heard portions of stories I quickly learned what an astonishing person he was and had to share that with more people."
Ultimately his efforts would claim Carter's life at 23, but his sacrifice helped give more than 4,000 orphans another shot at life. In an age with endless confrontations and foreign affairs debacles, "Searching for Barton Carter" provides a refreshing take on a humanitarian who didn't care about protocol or status, but merely what was right.
