CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio
Author and former music teacher Patricia Beathard is performing a new marketing campaign for her book "Schools of Yesteryear: History of the One-Room School" (published by Trafford Publishing).
Having always been fascinated by the one-room school and how it has served as a foundation for modern education, Beathard shares a history of one-room schools in the 1800s.
"I had visited a working one-room school that inspired me to tell the story of the education in the one-room school through the children, teachers and community of these schools," Beathard says. "These buildings were the center of community life."
Beathard takes readers through a typical day for 19th-century schoolchildren. She gives samples of lessons that were taught and explains how the building was heated in the winter, what the children ate while they were at school and the minimum facilities available at the time. Despite the hardships, the children experienced a fun learning environment, Beathard explains, her book having sections on games played, recipes for the food they ate and directions on how to make items used in school at the time.
"It is my hope that this book will be a help for students ages 8-12 in researching a topic for history projects and history fairs," Beathard says. "I hope they get an understanding of what school was like for boys and girls in the 1800s."
